RTS5452H

General Description

The RTS5452H is an advanced Type-C Power Delivery Controller that integrates all Type‑C Channel Configuration (CC) functions, Power Delivery functions (including BMC PHY, protocol, policy engine and device policy manager), AUX/HPD detection blocks, SBU switch, USB2.0 MUX (2:1), and VCONN switches into a single chip. New features in the PD3.0 specification including Fast Role Swap, Extended Message transmission, and PD FW update are implemented in the RTS5452H.

The SBU switch is used for Type-C SBU1/2 polarity swap in alternate modes (e.g. DisplayPort and Thunderbolt). The SBU switch also incorporates an over voltage protect circuit that will turn off the switch immediately to prevent the system from being damaged when SBU shorts to VBUS are negotiated to a high voltage. The AUX and HPD detection blocks are used for detecting DP cable hot plug and HPD signals in order to support DisplayPort alternate mode. USB2.0 MUX (2:1) is used for routing the Host USB2.0 DP/DM and other differential pairs to the Type-C port DP/DM based on plug orientation and alternate modes. The RTS5400 can be used in various applications and dramatically reduces the system BOM cost.

The built-in VCONN switch is used for CC to source VCONN power. It incorporates overcurrent protection, a hard short protect, and an over voltage protect function. When power consumption is greater than the preset threshold, the VCONN switch will limit the current to a set value, and turn off after a configurable debounce time.

When a large current increase is detected (e.g. short to GND), the VCONN switch will turn off immediately. In a case where CC has shorted to VBUS and has negotiated to a high voltage, the VCONN switch will turn off immediately to prevent VCONN_IN voltage from being driven up as a result.

The built-in high voltage 3.3V LDO (with its input connected to the Type-C VBUS) can power on the RTS5452H in dead battery applications. When the system power is valid, the RTS5452H will auto consume power from the system instead of the VBUS to reduce thermal loss caused by high voltage LDO.

The RTS5452H firmware supports USB Type-C Specification Release 1.3 and Power Delivery specification R3 V1.2. All the configurations such as power roles, data roles, and current modes of the Type-C port can be configured by firmware. The RTS5452H has various interfaces to communicate with other components, such as GPIO, I2C, and SMBUS. It is flexible for extending a variety of applications by using these interfaces as well as simplifying the addition of Type-C USB Power Delivery to any architecture. The RTS5452H's SMBUS/I2C slave interface system can implement system control achieving all Power Delivery related functions, such as Cable detection, Power Negotiation, Power Swap, Data Swap, VCONN Swap, etc. The RTS5452H can be statically configured via SMBUS for customized extra functions. Via the I2C master interface, the RTS5452H can control/configure other chips in the system, such as a PMIC with I2C, etc.

The RTS5452H can update its firmware using external SPI flash or EEPROM via a flexible ISP channel. The ISP function allows configuration of multiple features and settings. The ISP function is easy to use with USB/SMBUS/CCs and the RTS5452H's download tool.

The RTS5452H adopts an industry standard 40-pin QFN 5mm*5mm green package.
