Registration is one step of a required two-step certification process managed by the WiMedia Alliance, a non-profit organization promoting interoperable, worldwide ultra-wideband personal area networking, and comprises all required testing related to the physical layer. The WiMedia Alliance is now approving physical layer devices conforming to the WiMedia PHY 1.1 specification, which provides data rates of up to 480Mbps, as the culmination of a series of five interoperability events held over the last nine months. The second step in the WiMedia process, comprising protocol testing of end products, is targeted for completion by December 2006, in parallel with Certified Wireless USB testing conducted by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF).
“WiMedia's specifications and testing are among the most stringent and exhaustive of any wireless communication standard ever,” said Turi Aytur, director of UWB products at Realtek. “Realtek is pleased the RTU7010 has passed this rigorous battery of tests in full, and is very pleased it is in the first set of devices to do so. ”
Realtek was the first vendor to demonstrate all data rates in all mandatory channels of the WiMedia specification, in September 2005. The RTU7010 is part of the Next Generation Certified Wireless USB PDK offered by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF). The 7mm x 7mm chip is the most compact WiMedia PHY solution available in the market.
Realtek PHY technology has been adopted by several partners for use with their respective Certified Wireless USB-based silicon solutions, enabling highly optimized two-chip Certified Wireless USB solutions for PC, PC peripherals, and other embedded applications.
About the RTU7010
The RTU7010 implements all communications-related modes of the WiMedia PHY 1.1 standard in the 3.168~4.752GHz band, both mandatory and optional. These modes include eight data rates, from 53.3 to 480Mbps, all fixed-frequency and frequency-hopped channels, standard and burst mode, standard and burst preamble, transmit power control, and link quality indicator, along with many proprietary detect-and-avoid features for managing coexistence with other wireless technologies. The standard WiMedia MAC-PHY Interface 1.0 is also supported. The chip integrates a digital baseband processor with two full radio chains, along with the circuitry for optimal combination of the two radio inputs, and fits in a 7mm x 7mm package.
Availability
The RTU7010 is available immediately. An evaluation kit is also available.
