Realtek to Demonstrate Networked Media SoC Solutions at COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2008

2008/05/28 Highly Integrated Media SoC ICs Provide High-Definition Media Processing, Wireless/Wired Networking, and Mass Storage Functionalities

HSINCHU, Taiwan – May 28, 2008 – Realtek Semiconductor Corp. (Taiwan Stock Exchange: 2379.TW), one of the world’s leading network and multimedia IC providers, announced today that it will demonstrate its Networked Media SoC solutions at Computex, Taipei, June 3~7, 2008. The highly integrated Media SoCs are offered as a comprehensive package, with complete hardware and software reference designs, to enable fast time-to-market for consumer electronics products requiring high-definition media processing, wireless/wired networking, and mass storage functionalities.

“In recent years, the bulk of network transportation has changed from information data to multimedia content,” said Alex Chiu, President of Realtek Semiconductor Corp. “Realtek anticipated this trend some years ago and began to develop multimedia technologies aggressively, particularly high definition consumer electronics technologies. We are pleased to present the results of this research and development, and we hope our Networked Media SoC products will fulfill the desire of consumers for easily accessed multimedia content from anywhere within the digital home”.

The RTD1261 was the first system-on-a-chip to incorporate high definition media decoding, media encoding, and built-in Ethernet. It supports MPEG1/2/4 playback up to 720p/1080i/1080p, and provides an unlimited-resolution JPEG decoder. With fast HD JPEG decoding, rotation, and zoom-in, users can easily share high-pixel photos with family or friends on a large screen TV. The wireless/wired networking feature allows easy and convenient sharing and streaming of media from multiple devices, for viewing in multiple locations throughout the home.

Based on a complete and flexible hardware and software platform architecture, the RTD1261 is ideal for use in various types of applications, e.g., Networked HDD player, HDD/DVD Recorder, Networked Media Module for CE devices, etc.

The RTD1262/1282 additionally features Hybrid TV signal handling that combines analog and digital TV. It supports DVB-T/ATSC/NTSC/PAL/SECAM reception, recording, and timeshifting, enhanced media codec support, and provides an integrated HDMI transmitter.
The upcoming RTD1283 will include support for more high definition AV formats, such as H.264, VC-1, RM, etc, and will integrate more advanced interfaces.

The RTD1261 is in mass production, and the RTD1262/1282 is in small-volume production. The RTD1283 is under development and the engineering sample is forecast for release at the end of 2008. Aside from the RTD1283, the Realtek Networked Media SoC Family will be exhibited at Booth T201F, Computex Taipei, June 3~7.
