Realtek Launches New-Generation High Definition Audio Codecs

2006/03/07 Content Protection Technology and Skype Using Traditional Phone Increase Audio IC Penetration into the Digital Home

Hsinchu, Taiwan – March 7, 2006 – Realtek Semiconductor Corp. today announced its latest High Definition Audio Codecs, the ALC885 and ALC888 Telecom, at the Intel Developer Forum Spring 2006, San Francisco (March 7 ~ 9). The ALC885, featuring content protection technology, and the ALC888 Telecom, enabling VoIP/Skype applications using a traditional phone, provide economic and optimal audio solutions for digital-home PCs, setting a significant milestone for the industry.

The ALC885 is a high-performance 7.1+2 Channel High Definition Audio Codec with advanced lossless content protection technology that protects pre-recorded content while still allowing full-rate audio enjoyment from DVD audio, Blu-ray DVD, or HD DVD discs. The ALC885 performs lossless audio streaming at 96kHz/24 bit or higher.

Featuring a 106dB DAC SNR and a 101dB ADC SNR, the ALC885 offers superb audio quality, making it possible for the computer sound system to compete with consumer electronics audio devices and to be granted a quality audio brand logo, e.g., Dolby, DTS, or SRS. With the high SNR and content protection advantages, the ALC885 provides an ideal solution for home entertainment PCs.

The ALC888 Telecom is a high-performance 7.1+2 Channel High Definition Audio Codec for VoIP/Skype applications. The ALC888 allows Skype connection through a traditional phone, offering great convenience and providing an economic solution for user-friendly VoIP.

In addition, the ALC888 Telecom is able to auto-switch from a Skype connection to the traditional PSTN service in the event of power failure, and continue to provide functions and services, e.g., emergency call (911) access, providing flexible usage and convenience for users.

The ALC888 Telecom provides 10 DAC channels that simultaneously support 7.1 sound playback, plus 2 channels of independent stereo sound output (multiple streaming) through the front panel stereo outputs. The ALC888 Telecom integrates two stereo ADCs that can support a stereo microphone, and feature Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC), Beam Forming (BF), and Noise Suppression (NS) technology for an enhanced VoIP experience.

The ALC885 and ALC888 Telecom will make a debut demonstration at Booth 516 of the Technology Showcase, Intel Developer Forum Spring 2006, San Francisco, March 7 ~ 9.
